Step 2: HRG80™ Red Ginseng Chewable Tablets
Ginseng – the Asian Miracle Recovers
For centuries, ginseng had been the most popular herb in China and much of Asia. Unfortunately, the over harvesting of wild ginseng led to it becoming insanely expensive (over $700 a pound), which rendered it effectively unavailable. An effort was made to replace it with newer farmed ginseng, but that just didn’t work anywhere near as well. So its popularity started to wane. Because of this, I stopped using ginseng in my practice over 30 years ago.
Old wild ginseng produced over 50 different ginsenosides as a protective response to insect attacks and difficult weather. But these are usually not found in most farmed ginseng. And the ginsenosides currently produced are poorly absorbed and minimally effective unless converted into “rare (noble) ginsenosides.”
But now, a unique new ingenious aquaponic farming technique, which reproduces the challenges the plant faced in the wild, has allowed a unique farmed ginseng to have the same active component profile as the 17-year-old wild plants. This is what is used in HRG80™ Red Ginseng.
When I first heard about this new form of ginseng, having given up on the herb over the decades,I was skeptical. Until I tried one. Having had post viral CFS, and being fairly energy sensitive, I could feel the effects quickly. So, I offered it to people I treat with the disabling fatigue of fibromyalgia. It was life-changing for so many people that I decided to do a study.
My Study on HRG80™ Red Ginseng
I recruited 188 people with post viral or other causes of fibromyalgia who had at least a 50% decrease in function and energy. They took just one half to two a day of the unique HRG80 red ginseng chewable tablets (or 2 to 4 of the capsules). The published study results speak for themselves.
An Open-Label, Pilot Trial of HRG80™ Red Ginseng in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, and Post-Viral Fatigue (download from Pharmaceuticals 2022)
Results: 188 subject patients completed the one-month treatment trial. 60.1% rated themselves as improved, with 13.3% rating themselves as much better (p<.001), with a:
- 67% average increase in energy
- 44% average increase in overall well-being
- 48% average improvement in mental clarity
- 46% average improvement in sleep
- 33% average decrease in pain
- 72% average increase in stamina
Conclusions: This unique form of aquaponically grown red ginseng resulted in marked improvement in people with CFS and fibromyalgia. This included the subgroup with post-viral CFS/FMS.
Supporting Our Adrenal Stress Handlers in These Times of Stress
For those of you who would like a little deeper dive into what the research shows about red ginseng, this unique form has shown increased effectiveness for fatigue and cognition relative to other forms of ginseng. It may be especially helpful for stress-induced psychological fatigue as well. Importantly, this may be via modulation of the cortisol stress response via the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, which is significantly impaired in CFS. Vitamin and mineral deficiencies are a key cause of fatigue in this country. If you’re wondering which nutrient you need, basically the answer is “all of them.”

Add Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10)
Coenzyme Q10 (also known as ubiquinol and ubiquinone) is another critical component of our body’s energy producing mitochondria. A number of studies have shown it to be dramatically depleted in those with CFS/FMS.
Unfortunately, if this key component is not available, our "energy furnaces" are simply out of the game. But this molecule can be a bit challenging to absorb and, like ribose, our bodies make it slowly. Things that block the production pathway, such as cholesterol lowering medications or viral infections are associated with much lower levels of coenzyme Q10 in the body.
In addition to being essential for energy production, being a potent antioxidant and helpful support for brain function, coenzyme Q10 is also critical for our immune systems. For example, CoQ10 may be an important factor determining our susceptibility to COVID-19, impairing virus replication, decreasing oxidative stress, and balancing the inflammatory response.
The Problem with Most CoQ10 Products
The problem with most CoQ10 products is absorption, which requires the presence of fat. A number of approaches have been taken in addition to recommending that it be taken with a fatty meal. One is to use a related molecule called ubiquinol, but this can double the cost at modest benefit. What I have found to be most effective is to combine CoQ10 with a natural compound called gammasorb (gamma cyclodextrin). This safe and low-cost natural compound is being used for a wide array of medications and supplements, as it has been shown to dramatically enhance absorption.
This is why I use the chewable HRG80™ Red Ginseng, as it contains gammasorb. I find (and my published studies suggested) that one half tablet is equal in effect to two capsules, which effectively reduces the cost and pill count you might normally take.
Adding the gammasorb into the CoQ10 may increase absorption eightfold. And I have found this form of to be the most effective. So the only form of CoQ10 I now use and recommend is the HRG80™ Red Ginseng by Terry Naturally, one to two daily. This may well be equivalent to 800 to 1,600 mg of regular coenzyme Q10.
